Colin Byrne
The Colin Byrne Bursary was established by the Half Way House Bunclody GAA Club in conjunction with the Byrne Family to provide financial support to a number of training and support programmes with a particular focus on youth development and Gaelic games to ensure that Colin's legacy will live on in assisting young people to maximise their potential.
It was established in memory of a man whose warmth, generosity, and community spirit touched countless lives. Colin Byrne was known throughout Bunclody and beyond for his kindness and his ability to bring people together. Whether through sport, friendship, or small acts of support, Colin lived with an open heart and a belief in helping others.
The bursary has proudly supported a wide range of local organisations since it was founded in 2023 whose work reflects Colin's values of care, inclusion, and community. Each donation made carries forward Colin's enduring belief in giving back and helping others.
A cornerstone of the bursary's fundraising is the much-loved annual BBQ, which has become a highlight of the local calendar. This event not only raises vital funds but also brings neighbours, friends, and families together in the same spirit that Colin embodied in his favourite haunt the Half Way House. Its continued success is made possible through the generous support of the O'Reilly family and SuperValu Bunclody, who have stood behind the event since it began. Their backing has been invaluable, ensuring the BBQ thrives and the bursary can continue to reach more people and organisations.
The impact of the Colin Byrne Bursary is measured not only in the funds raised but in the lives touched. It has opened opportunities for young people, given vital resources to local groups, and provided tangible support to organisations that make a difference every day.
At its heart, the bursary is about legacy and community – honouring Colin by continuing the good he believed in, and showing the extraordinary things that can be achieved when people come together. Through the dedication of the Byrne family, the support of local partners, and the generosity of the community, Colin's name lives on in the positive change created every year.
